What are fibroids?

Fibroids are benign tumors that grow from the muscular tissue in the wall of your uterus. They may grow within the uterine wall, on the outer surface, or inside the uterus.

The growths vary in size and number and are sometimes smaller than a pea or larger than a cantaloupe, and you may have one fibroid or several.

They’re not cancerous. Why should I know about fibroids?

Most fibroids are noncancerous, but they can still cause problems. You need to know about fibroids because they’re very common, affecting anywhere from 20%-80% of women during their childbearing years.

The wide range in percentage of women affected is because you can have fibroids and not know it. Most fibroids don’t cause any problems, and they may come and go without you even realizing it.

However, not everyone is so lucky. Some women may experience unwanted symptoms from their fibroids, like abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, or infertility. Fibroids can also enlarge the waistline.

When should I schedule a consultation for fibroids?

You should schedule a consultation with Dr. Obron if you have pelvic pain or changes in your menstrual cycle. These symptoms may occur from many causes, including fibroids. Dr. Obron listens intently to your concerns, reviews your medical and gynecological history, and performs a physical and pelvic exam.

He may request ultrasound imaging to determine the size, number, and location of your fibroids. Dr. Obron spends time talking to you about his findings and answering all your questions.

What are some treatments for fibroids?

Treatment for fibroids depends on your symptoms. If your fibroids don’t cause any discomfort, Dr. Obron may only monitor the growths. If you have symptomatic fibroids, he may recommend medical interventions such as:

  • Hormonal birth control
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Medication to shrink the fibroids

When medical interventions fail to relieve your fibroid-related symptoms, Dr. Obron may suggest a procedure to shrink or remove the fibroids.

For women with no future plans for pregnancy, Dr. Obron may suggest a hysterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. This procedure is the only cure for fibroids.
