My periods are irregular. When am I in menopause?

Menopause is when you stop menstruating altogether. You officially reach menopause when you go an entire year without your period. On average, women reach menopause around age 51. It occurs because your ovaries stop making estrogen, the hormone that controls the menstrual cycle.

Before menopause, you go through a transitional period called perimenopause. During this stage, estrogen production fluctuates. An irregular period is one of the first signs of perimenopause and may start in your 30s or 40s.

What types of symptoms can I expect with menopause?

Menopause symptoms vary but usually start during perimenopause. Hot flashes are a common symptom, affecting about 80% of people during menopause. Other symptoms you may have during perimenopause and menopause include:

  • Night sweats
  • Mood changes
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Low libido
  • Vaginal dryness (vaginal atrophy)
  • Pain during vaginal sex

Some people may not have any symptoms or their symptoms are mild and go unnoticed.
