What does it mean to have PCOS?

Having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) means you have an imbalance in reproductive hormones where your ovaries produce higher than normal amounts of androgen, a male sex hormone.

Too much androgen may stop your ovaries from ovulating (releasing an egg), affecting your menstrual cycle. High levels of the male sex hormone may also cause changes in physical appearance, such as excess hair growth on the face and acne.

People with PCOS also have higher blood levels of insulin, the hormone that carries glucose from your blood into your cells for energy. Too much insulin in the blood makes the cells resistant to the actions of the hormone (insulin resistance), affecting your body’s ability to use energy from the food you eat.

My period is irregular. Could I have PCOS?

An irregular period is one of the symptoms of PCOS. With PCOS you may no longer get your period, or it may occur more or less often than usual. PCOS may also cause heavy bleeding.

Other symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Difficulty managing weight
  • Excess hair growth on the face, back, or chest
  • Thinning hair on the scalp
  • Severe acne
  • Patches of thick, dark skin (acanthosis nigricans)
  • Infertility
  • Ovarian cysts

The hormonal imbalance that occurs with PCOS also increases your risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea.

What tests diagnose PCOS?

No single test can diagnose PCOS. Dr. Obron listens to your story and asks detailed questions about your symptoms. He reviews your medical and gynecological history and performs a physical and pelvic exam.

Dr. Obron runs bloodwork to check hormone levels and performs an ultrasound test to look for ovarian cysts. You can expect a personal call from Dr. Obron when he has the test results he requested.

He diagnoses PCOS based on your symptoms after ruling out other potential causes.
