October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Mortality Rates Improving

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, so Dr. Obron wanted to bring you up-to-date on recent studies which have been published regarding how breast cancer mortality rates are improving.

The American Cancer Society has reported a decline in death rates between the years of 2006 through 2015 for breast cancer, a decrease of 2.6% for some racial/ethnic groups. Many factors can be attributed to this including early detection and advancements in technology throughout the years. This is encouraging news for one of the most common cancers for women.

As always be proactive in your mammograms, early detection may be life or death for some. Dr. Obron encourages all women, as early as 40 years old to get a regular mammogram screening from their doctor. If you have a family history of breast cancer or have a higher than average risk of breast cancer, your screenings may start as early as in your 20s-30s. As always, consult your doctor to find out when you should begin your mammogram screenings.
